EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps you break through the emotional blocks that are keeping you from living an adaptive, emotionally healthy life. EMDR uses rapid sets of eye movements to help you update disturbing experiences, much like what occurs when we sleep. During sleep, we alternate between regular sleep and REM (rapid eye movement). This sleep pattern helps you process things that are troubling you. EMDR helps to break down the brain’s negative coding of certain memories/experiences and to replace these with healthier responses/interpretations. EMDR is an evidenced based model for trauma treatment and intense negative experiences.
“The American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs/Dept. of Defense, The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the World Health Organization among many other national and international organizations recognize EMDR therapy as an effective treatment.”
What is different about EMDR?
-Past emotionally charged experiences often interfere with your updating process, and EMDR breaks through that interference and helps let go of the past and update your experiences to a healthier present perspective.
-EMDR uses a set of questions to organize your negative and positive feelings, emotions, and thoughts, and then uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or alternating tapping, as the way to help you effectively work through the trauma or negative cognitions related to the memory.
-This is neurological treatment process vs a traditional talk therapy.
